The Austin Parks and Recreation Department may be the ultimate park that any person interested in Austin real estate or visiting the place may ever need to go to. The park measures hundreds of thousands of acres featuring fun-filled activities and sceneries for people of all ages. There are several locations to choose from as well as well-trained personnel who maintain the safety and beauty of the area.

Park Description

The parks system began together with the founding of Austin way back in 1839. Some of the first parks in the area included Republic Square, Wooldridge Square and Brush Square. In 1875, more park developments began in the city with land donations and support from well-known personalities and generous benefactors. The mission of the department is to provide, protect and maintain a system that lets the Austin community enjoy cultural and recreational activities and sights. The department has received a number of awards and recognitions for great services.

After over a century, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department handles over 16,680 acres of land which includes 206 parks, 12 preserves, 74 miles of hike and bike trails, 172 sport fields, 117 miles of lake patrol, 90 playgrounds, 17 recreation centers, 2 beachfront facilities, 6 golf course, 108 tennis courts, 47 swimming pools, 6 amphitheaters, 4 museums, 3 senior activity centers, 1 nature and science center and 1 garden center. These are all located around making Austin truly a city within a park.

Exciting Hike and Bike Trails

There are around 74 miles of hike and bike trails throughout the park system featuring the most scenic landscapes in Austin. Several trekkers, joggers and biking teams visit from all around the country to experience the various trails with friendly weather all-year-round. Almost all parks in the system has trails that link to others. Great places to try are Blunn Creek, Barton Spring, Dove Springs, Gaines Creek, Eilers Park, Great Hills, Mount Bonnell, Mayfield Preserve, Quail Creek, Perry Park, Scofield Farms, Springdale, Red Bud Isle, Town Lake and Zilker Neighborhood.

The Trail of Lights

Zilker Metropolitan Park at Barton Springs Road features the Trail of Lights Festival every year which is considered as a holiday celebration in the city of Austin. The festival occurs usually during the first week of December just in time for Christmas. Highlights of the event include a candlelight path, nativity scenes, dance performances and the Yule log. There is also a 5K run, lighting of the Zilker Tree which is the largest man-made tree and contests for the children.

Off-Leash Bliss

Dog-lovers get to enjoy a total of 12 off-leash areas located throughout the city. Included in the list are Auditorium Shores, Bull Creek District Park, Emma Long Metropolitan Park, Far West, Northeast District Park, Norwood Estate, Red Bud Isle, Onion Creek District Park, Shoal Creek Greenbelt, Walnut Creek District Park, West Austin Park and Zilker Park.

People need to follow a few simple guidelines when bringing their furry friends; like the need to pick up after pets for cleanliness and constant supervision of owned animals. Other areas still allow pets which need to be leashed no longer than 6 feet. Violations shall result in a fine no more than $500.

Looking for Fishing at a good place, welcome to Bull Shoals State Park, where you see Nature’s best place for Fishing and Boating. The White River has a Dam and it makes a Lake which is spread in 45,440 acres. Anglers find Catfish, Lunker Bass, Trout, Crappie and Bream filled Waters. The Park has many Campsites offering Playgrounds, Pavilions, Trails and Picnic areas. You can also rent a Motor Boat, a Canoe and a simple Boat.
“Diamonds are Forever” Don’t think we are talking about the Bond Movie, Welcome to Crater of Diamonds State Park because it’s the only place in the whole world where the public can go and find any Gem or Diamond and keep it.
The first Diamond found here was in 1906 and the largest found in US a 40.23- carat “Uncle Sam” was found here. Since Crater became a Park in 1972, 20,000 Diamonds have been found here in this 36 acres Park. It offers many Campsites, Gift Shops, Laundry, a Café and many Trails for hunting Diamonds.
Devil’s Den State Park is in picturesque Valley of Ozark. The range of Mountains culminate and a 8acre Lake before rolling into a spectacular Stone Dam. This Park is open in summer only with cabins with kitchens are made in Nature’s beauty and enchanting Park.
The long trails can also be explored by riding. You can rent Horses and Guides to explore the Park excellently. The Camps are available for Groups and they offer you a standard Pavilion and Mountain Bike’s trails. All Grocery, Snacks and Gifts are available at the Park Shop.
Arkansas River runs through 34,000 acres of Lake Dardanelle State Park that has two Lakes. On the Lake shores they offer barrier-free fishing platform, hiking trails, a Golf Course, picnicking, rest rooms and hot baths.
As the name suggests Cane Creek State Park, 2053 acres, is full of timber trees. The physiographic regions of Arkansas State get together here- the Mississippi Delta and cascading Hills of State’s Gulf Coastal Plain. This is a spectacular place rich in flora, fauna and outdoor activities.
The facilities available here include campsites, picnic camps, barrier free fishing-platform, a standard pavilion and a gift shop.
A natural 20 miles long Lake Chicot State Park is a long and wonderful place. It was cut off after the River Mississippi changed its course. Fully equipped with Cabins and kitchens (many with a fishing dock and lake view), a swimming pool (summer only), picnic sights, laundry, a pavilion and playground.
Visitors can also find a gift shop with food and buy antiques, fuel, bait and launch ramps from the shop at the store/marina.
Arkansas first ecological and environment education can be had at Logoly State Park. 368 acres of natural beauty awaits for students and other groups. Facilities include six group camps, pavilion (free for educationists), picnic sites and trails. The visitor center exhibits exhibitions and an indoor classroom. NOTE: Educational groups are always given preferences on a first come first basis.

Beaver Lake is located in Carroll and Washington counties, and the crappie seem to be fat and hungry in these areas. Greers Ferry Lake is located, for the most part, in Cleburne and Van Buren Counties, and its pristine shores, amenities, and abundant and varied fish population make it a local favorite for all types of fishing, and crappie is no exception.
Lake Bob Kidd in Washington County is another place known for excellent crappie fishing in Arkansas. In Izard County Diamond Lake near Horseshoe Bend is also popular for crappie anglers.

While an easy to reach location is great, that isn’t all that draws visitors to Branson and the surrounding area.  We’ve got three spectacular lakes, each unique from the others.  First and probably best known in the area is Table Rock Lake.  With over 700 miles of shoreline and over 43,000 surface acres, this pristine lake is a paradise for boaters, water skiers, scuba divers and swimmers.  For the fishermen in the bunch, Lake Taneycomo’s cold, clear waters offer some of the best trout fishing in the world and flows through Historic Downtown Branson. Bull Shoals Lake is renowned for its largemouth bass and offers visitors who are looking for a little less traffic an opportunity to boat, swim and ski.  

Of course, Branson is has been in the live music entertainment business for 50 years and boasts over 50 theaters and nearly 100 shows.  Don’t think that we just have country music either – there’s something for every taste, ranging from The Liverpool Legends (hand-picked by Louise Harrison, George Harrison’s sister) performing as The Beatles to The Chinese Acrobats to The Legends in Concert featuring some of the world’s greatest impersonators portraying such artists as The Blues Brothers, Neil Diamond, Buddy Holly, Elvis and many others.  For country music fans, Branson still has plenty of shows to choose from including Jim Stafford and The Oak Ridge Boys. 

In addition to all the shows and the natural Ozark beauty, there’s a host of other things to do in Branson including Silver Dollar City, an 1880’s themed amusement park, White Water, Branson’s outdoor water park, the Titanic Museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum and The Butterfly Palace.  Located downtown on Lake Taneycomo, The Branson Landing, our newest $300 million addition, offers over 100 shopping choices, 10 restaurants and live entertainment.  With so much to do, it’s easy to see why over 8 million visitors flock to Branson yearly.
