Bull Shoals Dam

Construction of the dam at Bull Shoals began in 1947. a 7.5 miles long conveyor belt brought rock from a quarry near Flippin to the construction site. When the dam was completed four years later (in 1952) it was the fifth largest dam in the United States. The dam at Bull Shoals consumed enough concrete to build a wall six feet high and one foot thick, running the entire length of the West Coast. It cost the lives of three construction workers. The towns of Lead Hill, Arkansas, and Forsyth, Theodosia and Pontiac Missouri were relocated to higher ground. Free twenty five minute tours said to be handicapped accessible are give of the dam during the summer tourists season.

Overall Bull Shoals is a winding river-type lake with dozens of tributary creeks and uncountable number of smaller coves along its more that 700 miles of shoreline. Dept’s. in the lake tend to fall rapidly along much of the shoreline, increasing the importance of depth finder readings. Many fish particularly smaller spotted bass may be caused at depths of 50 feet or more. Additionally Visibility in Bull Shoals lake can be 30 to 60 feet underwater. For this reason, many dive shops and clubs do their qualifying here. Several boat docks on Bull Shoals offer air stations and rental gear. Snorkeling, underwater photography, and spear fishing are excellent in the lake.

Bull Shoals Lake, is popular year-round as each season unfolds a new panorama. Summer contrasts lush green hardwoods and cedar glades against towering rocky bluffs and unusual rock formations.
